I also have a tutorial that will teach you how to make your own flames if the brushes aren't exactly what you need.

I'm reworking a new version of the tutorial to show you how to use it with your pictures once you've made the flames. You know because the black background gets in the way.

I would think that not using a black background and just smudging a line on it's own separate layer would work, possibly having another layer being the black background temporarily to aid with seeing the smudge. After the flame would be made, you could delete the black background layer and even adjust the hue/saturation of the layer that the flame is in, maybe even the opacity for looks. Just a thought

If you put the flame on a layer by itself it won't change color when you try to use either hue saturation or color balance. Color Balance gets a more realistic flame anyway because flames are both red, yellow, and white. Hue saturation only adds one hue.

The white areas mixed with black and look gray are the areas that the hue/saturation or color balance change the color of ... if the white part is not mixed with gray it cannot change it. I have tried.

If you want to remove the black background go click on the layer itself and select blending options. In the blending options under Blend If: Choose Gray. On the "This Layer" Slider hold down the alt key on your keyboard and pull the spilder to the right, only half the slider should follow. DONE!
